What is industrial or agricultural hemp?

Industrial hemp is classified as the non-psychoactive cannabis sativa plant and is grown legally in over 25 states under the Federal Farm Bill Section 7606. Industrial hemp plants must be inspected and certified as such by the state in which they are grown.

What are cannabinoids and phytocannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are a diverse class of chemical compounds, Endocannabinoid refers to those that occur naturally in the body, while Phytocannabiniod refers to those that occur naturally in several plants including cannabis.  Phytocannabinoids are the primary chemical compounds found in all cannabis plants.

What is the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) and how do phytocannabinoids affect it?

The ECS is a biological system composed of endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced in the body such as anandamide and 2-AG), enzymes that synthesize and degrade the cannabinoids, and cannabinoid receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2) found in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The main purpose of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis in the body.

What is the difference between a full-spectrum hemp oil and isolate?

Full-spectrum hemp oils are made with whole plant hemp extracts that contain all of the beneficial phytocannabinoids (CBG, CBN, and others), terpenes (beta-caryophyllene, b –pinene, humulene, and limonene), plus flavonoids, polyphenols, and other important hemp-derived phytocompounds. In contrast, some hemp oil products are made from isolate, which is just one singular compound (such as CBD) added to a carrier oil, and therefore do not contain any of the other beneficial phytonutrients or provide the "entourage effect".

What is the Entourage Effect and why is it beneficial?

The Entourage Effect refers to the combined effect of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds in the plant working together in synergy. The combined effect is greater than the sum of the individual effects.  Only full-spectrum hemp oils deliver a complete entourage effect.

What is LipidTrans™ and how is it different from common extraction processes?

LipidTrans™ is a gentle, low-heat process that uses cellular bonding to infuse the active beneficial phytocompounds of the whole hemp plant with a lipid (usually coconut oil) while preserving the integrity of the plant molecules and making them bioavailable. This is why the LipidTrans™ hemp oils deliver an entourage effect. The process takes longer and is costlier, but the result is a safer and more beneficial product.

Harsh extraction processes requiring some combination of high pressure (Co2), high heat, and chemical solvents can leave out or damage the cells of the many beneficial phytocompounds and potentially contaminate the hemp oil with residual solvents.

What does single-origin mean?

Single-origin means there is one source for the hemp plant from which the finished hemp oil products are derived. Ideally, hemp plants and the specific variety should be traceable back to the country, state, and farm where they  were grown in order to verify farming practices such as sustainability and use of pesticides, synthetic chemicals or herbicides, as well as to ensure integrity from batch to batch.

What are the commonly accepted benefits of using hemp oil products?

Digestible hemp oil products as classified as dietary supplements. And just like other supplement companies, hemp oil companies cannot claim that hemp oil will treat or cure any specific condition. Descriptive language used most commonly is that hemp oil products “may help to relieve discomfort, support sleep, support the body’s interrelated signaling systems (the endocannabinoid system), and promote an overall sense of balance and homeostasis to the body.”

What are the possible side effects from using hemp oil products?

Hemp oils are safe for most people and there are very few, if any, potential side effects. The vast majority of people take them without ever experiencing any unpleasant effects at all, and the rare few who do will most likely experience only minor symptoms such as mild stomach upset or dry mouth. These can be relieved by taking with food and drinking plenty of water.

Is it legal for a person to use hemp-derived supplements in all 50 states?

Yes. Hemp-derived supplements are treated like any other supplement. Despite the laws regulating production, these supplements are legal to purchase and use in all 50 states, and no travel restrictions exist. Hemp-derived supplements are also safe for children and legal to give them. (As with any supplement, adult supervision is advised.)

Will taking hemp oil cause users to fail a drug test?

As with any cannabis-based product, there is always a chance of triggering a positive drug test depending on the amount/duration taken, the individual metabolism, and the type/sensitivity of the test. Users are encouraged to talk with their employer or healthcare provider if this is a concern.

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is an active chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD is one of the most prominant cannabinoids out of more than 100 that have been identified. Cannabinoids are a diverse class of chemical compounds that occur naturally in the body as well as in several plants including cannabis.

Where does hemp oil come from?

Hemp oil is derived from industrial hemp plants, which are cannabis sativa varieties that naturally produce less than 0.3% THC (the compound in cannabis that is known for producing a psychotoxic effect commonly referred to as being "high").  There are several different methods that can be used to extract the beneficial compounds from the hemp.

Our hemp oil is made using only plants grown on our own sustainable farm here in Colorado.  We infuse organic unrefined coconut (or MCT) oil directly with our whole plant hemp, no other solvents or ingredients are used or added.

What is the difference between hemp oil and CBD?

Although from most of what you read out there you would think that Hemp oil and CBD oil are the same things, but they are not! This is very important to understand if you want to take the oil that is going to give you the greatest benefit. Hemp oil gives you so much more than just CBD.

First, it's essential to note that hemp oil is not the same thing as hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil is extracted only from the seeds of the hemp plant typically using a cold-press. Hemp seed oil, while rich in omega acids, does not contain cannabinoids or terpenes.

CBD oil can refer to the isolated CBD compound added to a carrier oil, to CBD extracted from either hemp or marijuana, or to a broad or full spectrum of compounds in addition to CBD added to an oil. Hemp oil is more specifically referring to extractions from the aerial plant parts (mostly leaves and flowers) of hemp plants.

Our hemp oil is made by infusing organic coconut (or MCT) oil directly with the whole plant hemp material, which produces a true full spectrum oil. Our hemp oil is rich in CBD and other beneficial phytonutrients while containing only trace amounts of THC.

Does CBD get you high?

No, CBD will not get you high. It actually has been proven to have the opposite effect by blocking the receptors of THC and lessening the psychotoxic effect when present in a THC strain. It’s safe to take CBD and go on normally with your day.

What is the difference between THC and CBD?

Both marijuana and hemp are members of the cannabis family so there are similarities, but they are fundamentally different because marijuana can get you “high” and industrial hemp cannot get you “high”.  This is due to the amount of THC that the cannabis variety produces (0.3% THC and below is considered hemp, while over 0.3% is considered marijuana).  THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the cannabinoid found in cannabis known to have psychotoxic properties to which the “high” feeling is attributed.

The main difference between THC and CBD is that THC binds to CB-1 receptors in the central nervous system. CBD has a different molecular structure than THC  and so does not have a strong affinity to CB-1 receptors (or to CB-2 receptors in peripheral nervous system), rather it works mainly by inhibiting the FAAH enzyme responsible for breaking down anandamide, an endogenous cannabinoid (produced by the body).

Is a standard hemp seed oil similar to a CBD extract?

No. Hemp oil and CBD extract are not the same substance. The two are frequently confused, so we want to clarify that these two substances are completely different and used for different purposes.

Does hemp oil contain THC?

One of the most asked questions, hemp is not the same as the marijuana.  Hemp contains only trace amounts of  THC, and many hemp varieties have a naturally larger concentration of CBD.   Every batch of our hemp oil is third party tested to verify the CBD potency, but also to ensure it is well below the 0.3% THC limit.  The cannabinoid profile of hemp provides all of the benefits without the “high” feeling.

Is hemp oil legal?

Hemp oil is 100% legal in the United States and in many other countries in the world. Hemp oil is made from industrial hemp which is an agricultural crop. Industrial Hemp is not the same as marijuana. While these plants are in the same family, they have very different uses and effects when consumed, and are regulated differently.

Hemp oil is derived from industrial hemp plants and is federally legal in all of the 50 states in the United States. Currently, CBD derived from marijuana is not federally legal. The government classifies hemp as any plant of the cannabis family that contains less than 0.3% THC—this is federally legal. It classifies “marijuana” as any plant of the cannabis family that contains greater than 0.3% THC—this is federally illegal.

How do I use hemp oil?

Hemp oil can be taken orally as a tincture or capsule, or used topically as a salve. Hemp oil is a dietary supplement only. Hemp oil does not treat or cure disease. If you have a health concern, you should consult your physician or health care professional before using hemp oil.

How long does it take for Hemp Oil to work?

Many people feel the effects of using hemp oil immediately whether used as a dietary supplement or for topical use. For others, it takes a little more time. When taken orally as a dietary supplement, the hemp oil goes directly to the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is the body’s primary regulatory system. Like most dietary supplements, everyone will feel the effects of them differently and at different times.

How long does hemp oil last?

If you’re taking hemp oil every day, a full bottle should last about a month. This is, of course, subjective to the user and the frequency. It is recommended that you include hemp oil in your daily routine as a dietary supplement. There are multiple ways to use hemp oil which includes orally in a tincture, orally in a capsule, or topically in a salve. The time it will last will depend on the frequency and potency that you choose to use.

What are phytocannabinoids?

Phytocannabinoids are compounds found in nature that influence and support the endocannabinoid system (ECS).  This includes the many cannabinoids that are produced by the cannabis family of plants, the most familiar being THC and CBD.

Where can I buy hemp oil?

It is highly recommended that you do your research before clicking the “buy” button when shopping online. Functional Remedies produces trustworthy, natural, lab tested, and quality controlled hemp oil from seed to sale. Our Chief Science Officer, Tim Gordon has dedicated 25+ years cross-breeding and improving hemp strains to produce the most nutrient-rich plants from genetically-superior seeds.

What is the safety of your hemp extracts? Are there negative side effects?

With our patented proprietary process, the result is that Functional Remedies produces the highest quality hemp oil with maximum levels of phytonutrients. No other hemp oil company can match our decades of tireless research and development. And no other hemp oil company has access to our genetically-superior plants. Hemp oils are safe for most people (and animals!) and there are very few, if any, potential side effects.

How much CBD oil should I take?

The general rule when wondering how much CBD oil to take is to start small and increase your dosage as you go. It’s always easier to take more if you aren’t feeling the effects. A dose from 10 to 20 mg taken 1-2 times daily is typically a good dosage to start with.

What kind of testing/analysis is done on your product?

We test all of our batches and issue a Certificate of Analysis (COA) that is available online. Functional Remedies uses multiple accredited, third-party labs to identify, record and analyze the phytonutrient compounds in our proprietary hemp strains. We cross-breed specific strains using genetic sequencing in our R&D facility which are cultivated in our greenhouses and outdoor farms without pesticides of any kind. Our hemp flower is then independently tested to be certain it contains the highest possible phytocompound concentrations and the broadest spectrum of phytonutrients, essential terpenes, and is free of heavy metals, pesticides or and any impurities.

What type of extraction method do you use?

We spent years developing our proprietary LipidTrans™ process that preserves natural cellular bonds and yields phytonutrient-rich, full-spectrum hemp oil that’s incredibly efficacious. Our LipidTrans™ process is completely unique and much more effective than the harsh CO2 extraction processes used by most hemp oil companies. CO2 extraction uses high pressure and/or chemical solvents to fracture cells which greatly diminishes phytonutrient content.

LipidTrans™ is a gentle, low-heat process that uses cellular bonding to infuse the active beneficial phytocompounds of the whole hemp plant with a lipid (usually oil coconut) while preserving the integrity of the plant molecules and making them bioavailable. This is why the LipidTrans™ hemp oils deliver an entourage effect. The process takes longer and is costlier, but the result is a safer and more beneficial product. Harsh extraction processes requiring some combination of high pressure (Co2), high heat, and chemical solvents strip the hemp cells of the many beneficial phytocompounds and potentially leave behind residual solvents.

With our patented processes, the result is the highest quality hemp oil with maximum levels of phytonutrients. No other hemp oil company can match our decades of tireless research and development. And no other hemp oil company has access to our genetically-superior plants.

Why do people use hemp extracts?

Functional Remedies is always careful not to make improper claims including claims that are in violation of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). People use Functional Remedies products for a variety of reasons. Functional Remedies products focus on the endocannabinoid system and as we like to say “We help bring lives into balance.”

What makes Functional Remedies better?

Functional Remedies produces a full spectrum hemp oil which means it contains all of these phytonutrients and phytocannabinoids. Functional Remedies' proprietary process utilizes the entire hemp plant in its finished products which gives you the greatest benefit.

Only full-spectrum hemp oil can deliver the “entourage effect” which refers to the combined effect of the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other beneficial compounds in the hemp plant working together in synergy in your body. As a result, Functional Remedies full-spectrum hemp oils foster enhanced therapeutic benefits that other oils just don’t have. Functional Remedies hemp oil offers so much more than CBD oil which is mostly what is advertised.
