In your hemp oil research, you may have come across mention of the endocannabinoid system, which plays a large role in how full-spectrum hemp oil affects the body. It can be a little confusing, so we decided to outline the basics so you can better understand how hemp oil can work for you.

SO…WHAT EXACTLY IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?

The Endogenous Cannabinoid System — also referred to as the endocannabinoid system or ECS — refers to a collection of cell receptors and corresponding molecules located throughout the body – in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. Though it performs different tasks in each tissue, its goal is always homeostasis, or optimal balance, within the body.

Because of its ability to maintain homeostasis within the body, the ECS is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health.

HOW DOES THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM WORK?

Cannabinoids and their receptors work much like a lock and key. Two primary cell receptors make up the ECS, Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid Receptor 2 (CB2) – these are the locks. CB1 receptors are abundant in the central nervous system. CB2 receptors are more often found on immune cells, in the gastrointestinal tract, and in the peripheral nervous system.

Because cannabinoid receptors are found in so many places in the body, they are crucial for optimal health. In fact, they play a significant role in regulating many bodily functions like:

  • Sleep
  • Appetite, digestion, hunger
  • Mood
  • Motor control
  • Immune function
  • Reproduction and fertility
  • Pleasure and reward
  • Pain
  • Memory
  • Temperature regulation

WHAT IS AN ENDOCANNABINOID?

Endocannabinoids are the chemical keys that fit with the CB1 and CB2 receptors to tell your body when to get these processes started and when it’s time to stop. When this system is disrupted, you may experience dysfunction in some or all of the bodily processes listed above.

The body produces some of its own endocannabinoids, but we get most of them from food, especially omega 3 fatty acids. In fact, a 2011 study linked a deficiency of Omega 3s with mood changes caused by poor endocannabinoid regulation. A diet rich in Omega 3s can also give your metabolism a boost and prevent obesity related diseases like diabetes.(1)

Even though we talk a lot about cannabinoid receptors, enzymes play a big role in ECS function as well. Enzymes essentially go around and clean up after the ECS, breaking down any leftover cannabinoids that haven’t found a receptor to bind with.

One endocannabinoid that gets a lot of buzz is called anandamide (also known as the Bliss Molecule), a neurotransmitter that affects the immune system, eating and sleeping patterns, and pain relief. Anandamide works on both CB1 and CB2 receptors, and elevated levels of anandamide are believed to ease anxiety and nervous thought patterns. Unfortunately, there is an enzyme called FAAH that breaks down any excess anandamide in your system.

BUT IT SEEMS LIKE A WASTE TO GET RID OF LEFTOVER CANNABINOIDS!

It is! And this is where hemp oil comes in.

Full-spectrum hemp oil stops enzyme FAAH from breaking down all of the anandamide, and therefore makes more of it available for use by your cells. This is why hemp oil is a natural mood-lifter without psychoactive effects.(2)

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

Yes! Not only does the endocannabinoid system help cells communicate each other and with tissues, organs, and larger systems within the body, but there is evidence to support the ECS as a bridge between body and mind.

In addition to regulating our internal and cellular homeostasis, cannabinoids can influence a person’s relationship with the external environment. Socially, the administration of cannabinoids can alter human behavior, often promoting sharing, humor, and creativity. By mediating neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells), neuronal plasticity (forming new connections between brain cells), and learning, cannabinoids may directly influence a person’s open-mindedness and ability to move beyond limiting patterns of thought and behavior from past situations. Reformatting these old patterns is an essential part of health in our quickly changing environment.(3)

Not only does the endocannabinoid system help regulate systems within the body, it helps us regulate our patterns externally as well, including how we consciously interact with our community and environment.

Needless to say, the endocannabinoid system is full of possibility from a health and vitality perspective, and worth paying attention to!

You may have been hearing a lot about MCT oil these days, and for good reason. There are lots of benefits to Medium Chain Triglycerides – but 5 that we are especially excited about.

Not only does MCT oil provide the base for our hemp tinctures, but it offers a host of additional benefits when taken on its own.

MCT OIL IS A STABLE AND LONG LASTING ENERGY SOURCE.

Because MCT oil is transported immediately from the stomach to the liver, and broken down very efficiently, it quickly raises energy levels and isn’t converted to body fat.

MCT OIL STABILIZES BLOOD SUGAR.

A healthy metabolism requires a healthy regulation of blood sugars. When functioning properly, insulin (a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store as glucose for future use) keeps your blood sugar level from getting too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia). Unfortunately, certain pathologies (diabetes, obesity) can cause this sugar metabolism to be impaired, and rather than storing sugar in the muscle tissue for energy later, it stores sugar as fat tissue. MCT oil causes sugars present in the bloodstream to be stored in the muscle tissue rather than as fat mass.(1)

Studies have shown that this effect applies to healthy people too! (2) Athletes should also take note of this effect, as improved insulin function means that not only will carbs be stored as energy in the muscle tissue, but it can indirectly increase the amount of muscle mass in the body too.(3)

MCT OIL BENEFITS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM.

MCT oil contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which research has supported as an effective way to deal with viruses and bacteria that cause diseases like herpes, the flu, and cytomegalovirus.(4)

MCT OIL HAS INCREDIBLE BENEFITS FOR COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE.

Your brain can’t store its own energy, and needs a constant stream of blood glucose to function (this is why you get brain fog when your blood sugar dips!). Fortunately, there’s a backup mechanism in case your blood sugar gets too low – your liver can break down stored fat to produce ketones and keep your brain running. Your brain actually really likes to run on fat! Ketones readily cross the blood-brain barrier to provide instant energy to the brain. You could certainly eat a very high fat, low carbohydrate ketogenic diet, you don’t have to because the medium chain fats in MCT oil raise blood levels of ketones, providing a convenient shortcut to stable energy for your brain!

MCT IS AN EXCEPTIONAL CARRIER OIL.

Carrier oils are those which easily penetrate or absorb into the skin and thus facilitate absorption of other oils and herbal extracts when combined. Since it is one of the most stable oils, MCT oil does not go rancid, and its antimicrobial and antifungal properties prevent the other oils or extracts contained within it from spoiling.

When you choose a hemp oil or a tincture made with MCT oil (like any of our hemp tinctures) – you’re not only getting all of the cannabinoids, terpenes and phyto-nutrients from our single origin, full-spectrum hemp extract, but the added benefits of MCT oil, too. You can also add MCT oil in place of cooking oil or olive oil in foods and salad dressings for an added brain boost!

One of the questions we’re often asked is “How much hemp oil should I take?” Unfortunately, as hemp is not a drug it’s not something you can ask your physician. While, as the internet is fond of saying, your mileage may vary, let’s look at some general guidelines.

It’s important to get the correct serving size for proper use and best results. While we can offer some general pointers, the dosage will be different for everyone.

Think about it. We’re not all the same size or have the same body mass index (BMI). We don’t all metabolize supplements at the same rate and everyone’s bodies have different needs. On top of that, our hemp oil products vary in strength. Our tinctures, for example, come in strengths of 250mg, 500mg and 1,000mg of phytocannabinoids. And products produced by other producers can vary greatly on their potency, recommended dosage, and the type of product.

Our recommended Hemp oil usage

Because of the above, we can’t just say “You should take x-amount of hemp oil”. What we recommend, is that you start out taking small amounts and monitor the results.

Over a period of say, one week, keep notes of how much hemp oil you take, when you take it, and the effect. If you find you’re not getting the results you want, increase the amount  a little at a time.

For some people, one of our 10mg Hemp Capsules per day may be sufficient. Someone with chronic pain or extreme anxiety may need to take two of the 50mg capsules each day.

What are the side effects?

While there are some common side effects of taking hemp oil, they tend to be mild. But if you start out with small doses and only increase them if needed, you can help to lessen the side effects. Some of the things you may notice include a dry mouth, feeling more fatigued than usual, and a feeling of a full stomach.

If you are taking any prescribed medication, you should consult a medical professional before taking any supplements. As with any supplement, if you experience severe or unusual side effects, you should contact a medical professional immediately.

Still have questions?

We can’t possibly include every scenario or recommendation here. If you have questions about our hemp oil products or how to take them, please get in touch.

When you look at what people say about how pure and potent our hemp oil products are, you’d be forgiven for thinking they’re produced in a secret laboratory nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. The reality is a little different.

I asked Kai Metcalfe, our Chief Mad Scientist, (officially known as the Lab Director) to enlighten me on what happens at the lab. Here’s what she said:

Our hemp oil starts out as hemp plants

Okay, so that may not be a surprise to you. But did you know that we are the only hemp oil producer in the world that grows our particular strains of hemp?

Over the past 25 years, our President, Tim Gordon, has worked to produce hemp plants that yield high levels of phytonutrients while keeping THC levels down to 0.3% or less. In fact, Functional Remedies was the first company to develop its own genetically selected strains of hemp in order to maximize the entourage effect.

On our farm in Pueblo, Colorado, the hemp is grown and nurtured to maturity using organic and sustainable practices. Nestled between mountains and bordered by two mountain-fed tributaries, it’s a unique ecosystem that’s ideal for growing high quality hemp.

And speaking of quality, the first of many third-party quality checks that our hemp oil goes through is carried out at the farm. Before we harvest the hemp and send it off to the lab, it’s tested by the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) to ensure that the THC levels are 0.3% or less, and that there’s no nasty mold, pesticides or other chemicals lurking in the plants. Once we have the green-light from CDA, it’s harvested and sent off to the lab to make hemp oil.

From hemp to oil

At the lab, Kai and her team of nine dedicated staff begin the process of turning the hemp into oil. The lab is fairly small and kind of resembles a commercial kitchen. The equipment, though, makes it obvious that this isn’t a mom and pop burger joint. For a start, there are six, 30-liter pressure cookers used in the production process, along with a custom-made press, multi-headed pipette dispenser, and automated pump dispenser.

That’s not to say the whole thing is like the automated filling lines you see on tv at the big co-packing facilities. Everything is done lovingly by hand, from preparing the hemp oil to filling, labeling and sealing the jars of hemp tincture.

Extracting the Phytonutrients

Most producers use an extraction process to get the phytonutrients out of hemp. It’s not uncommon for producers to use solvents that bind to the beneficial molecules and drip them out, or blast the hemp with CO2 gas to force it out. Both of these methods have their downsides.

Using solvents like ethanol to extract from hemp may extract the cannabinoids and terpenes, but it also extracts the chlorophyll (the beneficial phytonutrients that makes plants green – which all of ours are), which tastes nasty. It also leaves a big problem. How do you get rid of the solvent after extraction? After all, no one wants to ingest nasty solvents.

Hemp extracted using solvents like ethanol or hexane will often show traces of these when tested in a lab. Of course, there are so-called ‘safe’ levels of these that are deemed to be ‘acceptable’. But do you really want to expose yourself to even small amounts of harsh chemicals as part of your daily wellness routine?

CO2 extraction doesn’t use solvents so there is no ethanol or hexane to remove. It involves cooling CO2 gas, pressurizing it to 10,000 pounds per square inch (p.s.i.), then heating it again and blasting the hemp with it. To put that into perspective, your car tires are probably around 30 p.s.i.

It’s very hard on the hemp, stripping it of all phytonutrients and during extraction, many of the terpenes are removed. It’s also expensive and requires a lot of maintenance, driving up the final price to the end-user.

We don’t use either method. In fact, we don’t ‘extract’ the phytonutrients at all.

Lipid infusion method

Want to know the secret to the purest, highest-quality, whole-plant hemp oil?

Using just the right combination of pressure, heat, and time, we add a ‘carrier’ of coconut oil or MCT to the raw hemp and allow it to gently become infused with the phytonutrients. It’s a bit like the way olive oil is infused with garlic or other herbs to give it flavor. Over time, the cannabinoids and terpenes make their way into the carrier, infusing it with all their goodness.

That’s not the end of the story, though. You see, after we’ve infused the carrier with the phytonutrients we immediately infuse it again. That makes sure we have every last molecule of goodness to maximize the entourage effect. As Kai put it to me, “You get the full expression of the plant. It’s as close to the whole plant as you can get without bottling the plant itself.”

The concentrated oil is then tested for potency by a third-party lab before being diluted with more MCT or coconut oil to the required dosage amount. Once it’s at the required dilution, we send it off for testing again.

Creating the final hemp products

When we get the lab results back, it’s time for the hemp oil to be processed into capsules, tinctures or salve. The capsules are filled using the pipettes and the tincture jars are filled with exactly the right amount of hemp oil.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that that’s the end of the story. It’s not.

Quality hemp oil

You see, we’re so passionate about the purity and quality of our hemp oil that it gets sent for yet another potency and quality check with a third-party lab. It’s only after that, that we offer it for sale to you.

Our commitment to quality extends throughout the whole life of our hemp oil – from farm to lab to store. As an FDA-registered food manufacturer, we work to FDA current good manufacturing processes (cGMP) that ensure our quality is consistent.

With organic and sustainable farming practices, and no fewer than four independent quality tests, you can be certain that the hemp products you buy from us are the most pure hemp products you can get.

Hemp oil must be analyzed to certify that it’s pure, free from harmful toxins and able to provide the claimed benefits. As with many natural products, the properties of full-spectrum hemp oil can vary immensely from producer to producer. Before you buy hemp oil, learn what to look out for.

Common hemp tests

Hemp oil is usually tested by third-party labs – companies not related to the producer. After testing, the labs issue a Certificate of Analysis, or CoA. And while CoAs by different labs often look different, each usually includes:

  • Potency testing
  • Pesticide testing
  • Microbiological testing
  • Terpene profiling
  • Residual solvents testing

The first test – potency testing – determines the levels of cannabinoids in the product. Hemp oil contains over 100 cannabinoids that have been identified in the plant. Potency testing determines the concentrations of all these cannabinoids, and therefore the potency of the hemp oil.

Each cannabinoid has a different effect on the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. And so, each one can have different beneficial aspects. For example, some cannabinoids are widely considered to have pain relieving, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure and anti-nausea effects. And others may have anti-fungal and anticonvulsant properties. It’s important to know the levels to determine the potency of the full-spectrum hemp oil.

Tests you should look for before you buy hemp oil

Pesticide testing: Even when grown organically, certain pesticides may be used on hemp plants. The same pesticides that help the hemp survive and flourish could make you extremely ill in high concentrations, That’s why it’s so important to test for them.

Microbiological testing: This is done to make sure there is no mold or harmful bacteria on the hemp that was used to make the hemp oil. Any pathogens that are present on the plants can easily get inside the body and have a negative effect on your health.

Residual Solvents testing: A thorough lab test will also test for any residual solvents. While Functional Remedies doesn’t use solvents in its hemp infusion process, many producers do. And concentrations of solvents like hexane, ethanol, propane, carbon dioxide or acetone can lead to some very serious health issues.

Terpene testing: Terpenes are what gives hemp oil the distinctive color and flavor unique to each strain of the plant. It is from the terpenes that we get flavors like mint, berry, citrus or pine. And they are also believed to have beneficial effects on health.

As you can tell, a lab test for a hemp oil product provides a lot of insight. That’s why it’s important to see the Certificate of Analysis before you buy a full-spectrum hemp oil product.

Many people are discovering the natural and therapeutic benefits of hemp oil. But they also may be discovering that many of these products in today’s marketplace are low quality and ineffective. There are a few important characteristics worth looking for when deciding where to buy a high-quality hemp oil. Let’s take a look:

THE RIGHT STUFF

With all nutritional, natural products available today, the most important thing to look for is the quality of the plant itself. With hemp oil, that means looking for superior genetics so the hemp plant itself can provide the highest percentage of beneficial phytonutrients. There’s no producing this in a laboratory: The plants are either high quality or they are not. Look for companies that offer decades of research and patented genetics to ensure you’re buying the right stuff.

KNOW YOUR SOURCE

High quality hemp oils shouldn’t be handled by dozens of processing companies that may or may not be monitored. Bad seeds from an unknown source or an inefficient extraction process may outweigh quality refinement or another phase of product development. Make sure you purchase your hemp oil from a company that can ensure quality every step of the way. Top producers own their own labs, farms and processing facilities, while maintaining a high level of trust within the industry.

BENEFIT FROM THE WHOLE PLANT

There are a few different ways that companies produce hemp oil, but by far the most effective and highest quality methods are those that offer the wide range of benefits that come from the entire plant rather than simply one isolated molecule. By utilizing the whole plant, users can gain access to over 100 nutrients and other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant that will enhance the performance of the product. This is far superior to many companies providing only 1 single isolate molecule in their product.

GENTLE PRODUCTION

Many hemp companies cut corners with an extraction process that uses high pressure and chemicals to rip apart the hemp cells to gain access to a limited set of molecules offering therapeutic benefits. A high-quality hemp oil will instead be produced with a gentle lipid infusion process that preserves the integral membrane of the plant, making it a more natural and effective product containing the full-spectrum of hemp oil nutrients and compounds.

A WIDE VARIETY OF OPTIONS

One of the main benefits of a high-quality hemp oil is that there are many ways to ingest the product to reap the results. But some companies will only offer a capsule or a salve. Find a company that provides a choice of many different methods, because you may find that one works better for your circumstance than another. There is no need to limit yourself when you can try a tincture, salve or capsules to determine which is best for you. These products are designed to maximize your health, so the highest quality methods show results.

There are a lot of companies in the marketplace today producing hemp oil and selling it online that will claim that they have the “best” or the most pure hemp oil. But what does that really mean? What makes one hemp extract superior to another?

Turns out, a lot. Just like so many herbal dietary supplements available for self-healing, hemp oil tinctures, capsules and salves can vary dramatically in content and effectiveness. The bottom line when determining what hemp oil online is best for you really comes down to the results: is it best forYOU? Let’s break it down.

BEST FOR YOUR CONCERNS

Of course hemp extract should have the highest levels of cannabinoids, high levels of terpene and other micro-nutrients, but if it’s not working for you then it’s simply not the best for you. Pure hemp oil can support emotional stability and a relaxed mental state and address physical discomfort and sleep patterns. The best hemp oil will help you have a sense of overall emotional balance and physical health. Read reviews and testimonials from customers, but also do your own research about what can work best for your concerns.

BEST FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE

If you simply want to take a pill in the evenings as part of your comprehensive health regime, hemp extract tinctures aren’t going to be best for you. It may sound simple, but determining what type of delivery method will help maximize the results of the product for you. It is important to take your servings on a regular basis, starting out with a small amount and then potentially increasing the serving size if necessary. Check the online stores for the different types of hemp extract serving sizes and delivery methods. The company should be able to offer you the product that is best for you.

BEST LIFESPAN

Buy a hemp oil online that isn’t going to go bad immediately, because the best products are the ones you never have to waste. Research the company to see the studies they’ve done on how long their products last on the shelf. For example, Functional Remedies just completed research that showed that their products saw no degradation of quality within 24 months, or two years. As you may have seen with old cooking oil, bad oil becomes rancid.

BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK

Bottom line, efficiency is key to the best hemp oil. How has the hemp extract been produced so that is going to have a positive impact for your concerns? For example, some capsules are made with sub-par materials that degrade rapidly in the acids of the stomach, causing the product to lose its ability to provide comprehensive benefits to your body. Functional Remedies Pro line uses enteric capsules, which are pharmaceutical grade and delay breakdown until the small intestine. This increases the adsorption of phytonutrients into the bloodstream, which in turn improves the effectivity of the hemp oil.

One of the most frequent questions that customers ask about hemp oil is simply, “How much hemp oil should I take?” It’s difficult because the FDA regulates all herbal dietary supplements, limiting a company’s ability to describe all the benefits as well as the best way to take hemp oil. Unlike prescription pills and other medications, there is no set “dosage.” But that’s actually a good thing: Because hemp oil is used by so many different kinds of people to address so many different kinds of concerns, a one-size-fits-all serving size would be impractical and potentially wasteful. So, whether you’re buying a 1,000 mg hemp oil or the 250 mg hemp oil, here are some tips to determine how much hemp oil to take.

ALWAYS START LOW

Because the hemp tinctures and capsules produced by Functional Remedies are made from the whole plant (using a proprietary plant variety with the highest concentration of cannabinoids possible with just 0.3 percent or less of THC, then seeped in oil using a gentle lipid infusion method to maintain the membrane and other benefits of the plant), you would have to take A LOT to have negative impacts. Still, when you first get your product, you’ll be wondering, “How much hemp oil should I take?” The answer is individual experimentation.

The tinctures produced by Functional Remedies come with a dropper that has a bulb calibrated to draw 0.75 milliliter per squeeze. That’s not filling up the entire dropper, because one squeeze won’t draw up an entire dropper’s worth. Make sure your dropper end is fully in the liquid and gently press the bulb for one serving.

Each level of tincture potency has twice as much as the previous level. That is, one serving of 250mg hemp oil tincture is 6.25mg.  A serving of 500mg hemp oil tincture is 12.5mg, and a 1000 mg hemp oil tincture contains 25mg per serving.

NOTICE YOUR PERSONAL BENEFITS OF HEMP

What do you need to maintain optimal and comprehensive health? Before you begin using hemp oil, we recommend you take time to write down what you’d like to address – perhaps this includes stress, disrupted sleep patterns, physical discomfort, emotional stability or other issues. Rate each concern on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being horrendously awful and 1 being a minor problem.

Next, take the smallest serving size twice a day, perhaps once in the morning and once in the evening. Each day for a week, record the status of your concern. Then you’ll be able to tell if it’s working at the level you expect or if you need to increase your serving size.

SERVINGS FOR HUMANS VS. ANIMALS

Many customers purchase hemp oil tinctures for their animals as well. Dogs suffering from separation anxiety, horses with joint discomfort or cats approaching the end of life need additional support. Our recommendation is 1 mg for every 10 lbs. of weight for dogs, 1 mg for every 20 lbs. of weight for cats, and just 5 mg for every 1,000 lbs. of weight for horses. Start with two servings a day and closely monitor the animal.

Want to learn more about why you can trust you are getting the potency promised on the bottle? Learn what we do to offer a high quality hemp oil for sale.

And if you are ready to try full-spectrum hemp oil tincture, we recommend one of our most popular items, the 500mg tincture.

One day almost three decades ago, Tim Gordon’s dear friend put her arm around him and, with tears, said thanks.

Gordon, who has spent his entire career helping others heal through the power of hemp, had known her and her husband for years, having sat around campfires together and listened to stories about the lives they shared growing up in rural Ohio. Her husband, only in his late 40s at the time, had been a cigarette smoker and was diagnosed with a very challenging health issue affecting his lungs. During his medical battles to regain wellness, Gordon’s friends had relied on the relief that comes from the compounds found in the hemp plant. It was Gordon who had helped them understand and access the highest-quality plants.

“The [health concern] progressed fast initially, and it was shocking to see him healthy one month, sitting across the fire, and see how he changed. She told me I really helped. She said going through [the traditional treatment methods] was really hell, and I really helped,” Gordon remembered. “I was still young and inexperienced at the time, but I was moved by it and it made me cry.”

The situation encouraged him to truly dedicate his life to learning, growing and improving the hemp plant to maximize its benefits for humans and animals alike. Today, he is the CSO of Functional Remedies, a company that produces the most effective hemp oil dietary supplement on the market today.

Gordon’s long history and skills with the medicinal benefits of hemp played a crucial role in the development of the current products, which include hemp oil capsules, hemp tinctures, hemp oil for sale, and a hemp salve. No other company has access to Gordon’s unique knowledge of genetics, growing techniques, processing methods and understanding of legislative policies. Just as he worked to help his friends so many years ago, today he is doing the same on an even bigger scale.

“I really get into the science of [hemp], the science of organic healing,” Gordon said. “I’ve finally gotten there with the team of visionaries and professionals we have here at Functional Remedies. We all have a singular focus on reaching and helping the world.”

ROOTS REACH TO OHIO CORNFIELDS

Gordon, 45, started working with the hemp family of plants years ago. Over the years, he said, he’s learned about how the plant can really help people and also hinder people.

“I got to learn how this plant works and see how it works in different places and within us,” he said. “I was constantly learning about the plant as to why it needed certain things and why it worked optimally with those certain things.”

For example, the hemp plant reacts to the sunlight patterns in certain parts of the nation, and the “buddy crops” that are used as cover after harvest must not leech the needed nutrients out of the soil. Like all agricultural crops, there are so many variables that must be sorted to produce the healthiest, most productive plants.

“There’s no ‘Jack and the Bean Stalk’ seed you just put in the ground,” he laughed.Groundbreaking Work in Colorado

In 1996, Gordon and his family – his wife, Jennifer, with whom he is raising three children – moved across the nation to Colorado, where just five years later medicinal marijuana was legalized. Drawing on his early experience with his friend battling cancer, Gordon helped start the Front Range National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). The non-profit agency worked through state legislative issues regulating the medical use of these plants.

In 2007, he opened one of the first dispensaries in the nation, called Medicinal Gardens in Fort Collins, Colorado. His mission was to provide top-grade plants for folks battling a wide array of health issues. Sometimes he’d even get in his car and deliver orders to his customers who were too sick to drive themselves to his dispensary.

“I was changing lives at that point, it was more empowering than anything,” he said. “It was so cool to hear from a spouse or the kids of someone who was helped by my products, just saying thanks. It was just amazing.”

It was that feedback, coupled with his deep understanding of the plant, that encouraged him to branch out and work on a higher level to spread the knowledge about how powerful the plant is for those who are suffering. He decided to sell his dispensary and provide consultation work for companies throughout the hemp industry.

In 2014, a company called Functional Remedies LLC approached him to help with their propagation laboratory for growing phytonutrient-rich hemp for health and overall well-being. Soon, he was on the staff full time as part of the growing team.

FOCUSING ON FUNCTIONAL REMEDIES

At Functional Remedies, he first served as the operations director, sharing secrets and skills he’d learned over the years of hands-on cultivation and study. With his breeding techniques and vision, the company soon expanded from producing the raw hemp plant material to creating highly effective products under the FR brand.

“We do things completely different, and it comes from my many years of researching this plant,” Gordon said. “I studied the entourage effects in the plant and the synergistic effects on us, and what processes are the best. Over the years of trial and errors, I think I’ve found the best one. We have the most highly effective cannabinoid products in the country.”

Functional Remedies produces hemp oil with hemp plants that have a genetic strain (Gordon was one of the few who contributed to the mapping of the hemp genome for science) that offers the highest level of cannabinoids with less than 0.3 percent THC. As a result, the hemp tinctures and capsules do not result in any psychotropic “highs” like medical marijuana does.

Once the hemp plants are grown on Functional Remedies’ organic farm in Colorado, they are transferred a few hours to the Functional Remedies laboratory, where technicians use the entire hemp plant (its flowers, leaves and parts of the stem) in a gentle lipid infusion processing method. With Gordon’s leadership, the team avoids the harsh chemicals and pressurized processes used by other companies in the industry. Instead they focus on preserving as much of the natural benefits of the hemp plant in its final products, which are tested for quality and potency many times before sold online atwww.functionalremedies.com.

CONTINUING TO HELP OTHERS FEEL BETTER EVERY DAY

Now the CSO of the company, Gordon stays busy expanding the product line and overseeing the team of 26 dedicated professionals on his staff. He also has remained active in the legislative issues that are happening on a national level in regard to the legality of hemp. Of course, hemp products have always been legal to produce, buy and ship anywhere in the United States.

For his work, he has been featured in numerous magazines, published his own articles and was even featured in a Newsweek article on his work with the hemp genome.

“It’s amazing how much it has changed from those days in the cornfield to now looking at the DNA of the hemp genome structure, wow,” he said.

Still, Gordon spends as much quality time as he can with his family, which includes 12-year-old Sophie and his sons Dawson, 10 and Jasper, who’s 8. Along with Jennifer, they enjoy being outdoors, skiing, camping and fishing.

His children also love learning about agriculture and the unique qualities of the hemp plant, he said.

“It’s already in their blood. They’re down on the farm with me, touching the plants and learning about them from the medical side,” he said. “My son Dawson has an incredible interest in farming. We’re talking about starting a Future Farmer’s of America Hemp Organization at a local school.”

Of course, Gordon remains motivated by stories like the thanks he received from his friend whose husband battled cancer back in Ohio. He talks with people every day explaining why hemp oil is a safe and natural alternative to many chemical pharmaceuticals, which have more side effects and overdose deaths than hemp over its entire history.

He’s also continuing to work toward comprehensive legalization efforts for hemp throughout the nation.

“It’s not going to stop,” he said. “Now, doctors can prescribe hemp compound drugs for specific ailments. My passion is for these people and how the plant helps them. I have to make sure this industry will stay.”

If you are one of more than 40 million American adults who suffer from stress and tension, you’ve probably tried all kinds of ways to simply be at ease every day. Maybe you try to exercise (when you have the time, whenever that is), journal, chew gum, light candles and breath in essential oils and spend time with your friends as much as possible. Some people consult with their doctors seeking options to alleviate constant fear and worry. But are these methods working, and are they actually good for you? Finding a natural way to keep emotions balanced even during stressful times can be challenging, but scientific research has shown that full spectrum hemp extract can support the body’s ability to stay calm and centered.

WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress, Tension and Frustration are some of the most common mental issues in the United States, with 40 percent of Americans experiencing serious emotional challenges at least once in their lives. Women are twice as likely as men to be impacted. Even when these feelings of nervousness last for at least six months for adults and one month for children, only a third of adults seek treatment, and only a fifth of teenagers do. But stress and tension are more than just “something in your head”: Worry and fear can impact your life, your school work, job and your relationships. Frustration and over-thinking as well as trauma-related concerns can make you feel misunderstood and unable to relax. Sometimes these life challenges can also just make you literally sick to the stomach and unable to sleep. Its causes are varied: genetic risk, chronic life stress, medical conditions, and certain environmental and behavioral choices can all lead to increased life stress and tension.

STUDIES SHOW HEMP OIL ADDRESSES CONCERNS

Due to all the unwanted side effects and even addictions that can result from some prescription medication, scientists have been researching natural alternatives to discover potential relief for extreme stress and tension. In2015, the journal Neurotherapeutics published a study that found evidence that phytocannabinoids “have considerable potential as a treatment for multiple [emotional challenges].” The researchers looked at data from preclinical, human experimental, clinical and epidemiological studies to look at pure hemp extract and its impact on the endocannabinoid system, which regulates many vital body functions including emotional behavior and response to adverse events. With “an extremely safe profile” that includes no psychotropic effects (unlike medical marijuana), hemp oil pointed positive. Customers with Functional Remedies share similar experiences in theirreviews of hemp tinctures and capsules.

BE SURE TO PURCHASE HIGH QUALITY HEMP OIL

If you wish to try hemp oil, it’s important that you find a product that can be trusted to deliver the exact servings and potency you are expecting. Functional Remedies starts with patented seeds that grow hemp plants with the highest percentage of phytocannabinoids possible with only 0.3 percent of THC (the compound that causes the “high”). These hardy plants are grown our own organic farm in Colorado and then processed in our nearby laboratory using a gentle lipid infusion method that preserves all the nutrients and benefits of the entire plant for the most effective product.
